Why AI search (GEO) matters now, not later
Your customers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions they used to type into Google. When the AI answers and names a few businesses, being one of them is the new front page.

For twenty years, search meant typing into Google and scanning a list of links. That is changing in front of us.
A growing share of people now open ChatGPT to ask which contractor to call. They type a question into Perplexity instead of Google. They read Google's own AI Overview before they ever reach the blue links.
The internet has more than one search engine now.
The AI answer is the new front page
When an AI tool answers a question, it does not hand back ten links. It writes a short answer, and for a local query it often names a few specific businesses. Get named and you just won the most prominent spot on the page. Get left out and you are invisible in that answer, the same way page two of Google is invisible.
That is the shift. The competition is no longer only for a ranking in a list. It is to be one of the handful of businesses an AI decides to mention by name.
When your customer asks AI for help, whose business is the answer?
GEO is how you earn the mention
Generative engine optimization is the work of getting cited in those answers. It overlaps with SEO but is not identical. The signals that matter most are:
- Structured data. Clean, accurate schema that tells the engines plainly what you do, where, and for whom, so a model can parse and trust it.
- Citable content. Pages that answer real questions in self-contained passages an AI can lift and attribute, not vague marketing copy.
- Real brand mentions. How often and how well your business comes up across the open web the models read. Genuine mentions matter more here than raw backlinks.
Why later is the wrong answer
The instinct is to wait until AI search is bigger before investing. That is backwards. Once an AI consistently names a competitor as the answer for your category in your town, displacing them is hard. Becoming the default answer while the field is still mostly empty is easy. Most of your local competitors have not even checked whether the AI engines can read their site.
We're still early in AI search. The companies who build for it now will hold the answer for years.
A visibility audit shows your current AI-answer footprint across the major engines, so you know whether you are named today and what it would take to be named tomorrow.
Frequently asked
- What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
- GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the work of getting your business cited inside AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of links. GEO aims to make your business one of the few named directly when an AI writes the answer. They overlap, because both reward a fast, well-structured, trustworthy presence, but GEO leans harder on structured data the models can parse and on real brand mentions across the web the models are trained and grounded on. As more people ask AI instead of scrolling links, GEO becomes the front page.
- Why should a local business care about AI search now?
- Because the behavior is already here and growing fast, and because most local competitors have not noticed. When an AI answer names three businesses for a query, the rest are invisible in that answer, the same way page two of Google is invisible. The businesses that build the signals now, clean structured data, citable content, and genuine mentions across the web, are the ones the models keep naming as this becomes normal. Waiting means letting a competitor become the default answer the AI gives, which is far harder to displace later than to claim now.
